WEATHER AND EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING: 2024-2025

General Considerations

Emergency decisions to close in-person school are made to protect students from the potential harm of severe weather and other hazards.

UCA will conduct in-person school in the normal manner if there is a reasonable expectation that 85% or more of the student body will be in attendance. Please realize the school draws students from a wide geographic area.
When possible, decisions to close in-person school will be made by 6:00 am.
UCA will monitor the Bloomington and surrounding school districts, MN DOT, and other appropriate offices in making decisions regarding closings, etc.

Communications

Communication during any emergency is critical to safety. School closing announcements and other emergency-related information will be broadcast via TV, the UCA app, text, email, facebook, and instagram.

Two-Hour Late Start

The school day will begin at 10:15 am. The bus route will keep the same timing, adjusted for two hours later than normal.The Before School Club will begin at 8:45 am.

Early Dismissal

An announcement will be given as to what time the school will close and students need to be picked up. The bus will depart the school 15 minutes after the closure time, and proceed with the normal timing of stops.

Extra-curricular Activities

When school is canceled, all school-related activities are also canceled i.e., extra-curricular activities, athletics, clubs, and extended day care.

Procedures for other emergencies

It is not possible to predict all hazards or conditions that could cause disruption to a school day. Parents can be assured that UCA will cooperate fully with other agencies and officials whenever there are dangers due to fire, tornadoes, power failure, gas leaks, or if other emergencies occur. We will do everything within our power to protect the health and safety of the students.

Expectation of parents

Parents should be certain their children are appropriately clothed, instructed, and otherwise prepared for emergencies, particularly weather emergencies. Parents should monitor communication outlets for reports during times of inclement weather. If parents disagree with a decision to hold school on a day when they feel the weather is hazardous, they are encouraged to make the decision that is best for their family.
